Mountain carts with children

Most children and teenagers love Mountaincarts. Feeling like a racing driver – when else do you get to do that as a child?
However, it is particularly important with children to weigh up the risks beforehand. As operators, we stipulate a minimum height of 1.35 m. We also recommend a minimum age of 10 years.

However, these basic requirements alone cannot determine whether a child is already capable of safely completing a run.

Below you’ll find some recommendations for spending a lovely, relaxed day with your children here!

Advice for travelling with children

Please note: As well as height, individual development, experience and the ability to assess speed, braking behaviour and hazardous situations also play an important role.
It is important to us that parents take these aspects into account when making their decision and honestly consider whether they feel their child is capable of riding.

  • Breaks: The descent is 3.5 km long; depending on your child’s riding style, the ride takes around 30 minutes – they should be able to concentrate for this long and muster the strength to brake. There are two sections where the mountain cart has to be pulled. You might want to use these for a short break.
  • Mountaincart: For children, choose a size S Mountaincart. Have a bit of a practise at the start before you set off down the run: test the brakes together. The brakes are very smooth; it’s important to brake on both the left and right at the same time. Remind your child to always keep their feet on the footrests.
  • Speed: You don’t need to set a speed record. The route can also be cycled at a leisurely, slow pace: encourage your child to choose a pace at which they feel comfortable.
  • Physical requirements: The minimum height required to steer and brake a Mountaincart effectively is 1.35 m. Recommended age: 10 years and over.
  • Safety: Children must only ride downhill when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Either ride in front of the child to set the pace – or ride behind them to provide ‘back-up’. Discuss with your child which option makes them feel safer. In any case, always make sure you can keep an eye on them.
  • Helmet and goggles: A helmet is compulsory for all mountain cart riders; goggles are strongly recommended to protect against dust and wind.

You’ve got off to a good start, but after the third bend it’s all a bit too much, isn’t it?

If, whilst driving, you realise that you or your children are finding it too much, park the Mountaincart at the side of the road – making sure it isn’t in the way or can’t roll away. Then carry on on foot.

Let one of our staff members know, and we’ll collect the Mountaincart. Of course, this isn’t ideal or desirable – neither for you, who’ve paid for the Mountaincart, nor for us, who have to collect it. But sometimes it really is the better solution!
