Essential kit includes sturdy, well-treaded walking boots, which provide support and ensure a secure footing even on uneven or stony ground. In snow, ice or on icy sections of the route, crampons may also be useful. They can be easily slipped over suitable hiking boots and provide extra grip on slippery surfaces. It is important to choose crampons that fit your boots properly and to check the current trail conditions before setting off. It is also advisable to wear functional, layered clothing: This allows you to adapt flexibly to changing temperatures and weather conditions. A warm layer and a rain and wind jacket should always be in your rucksack, even in fine weather.

Equally important are plenty of water and a small snack. Depending on the length and difficulty of the hike, you should also pack sun and rain protection, a small first-aid kit, a fully charged mobile phone and a hiking map or a suitable navigation app should be packed.

Your kit should be suited to the planned route, your own fitness level and the acurrent weather and trail conditions . A leisurely hike to an alpine hut presents different challenges to a demanding mountain tour.

Weather on the mountain

Ready for anything

The weather on the mountain can be quite different from that in the valley – and can change within a short space of time.

That’s why it’s worth checking check the current weather forecast and the forecast for the entire duration of the hike. It is also highly recommended to check our webcam; there you can see the current conditions and temperatures in real time.

Even in fine weather, you should always carry a rain and wind jacket as well as a warm layer of clothing in your rucksack. In uncertain weather conditions, it is also advisable to adjust the route accordingly or turn back in good time.

Particular caution is required during thunderstorms. Anyone caught in a thunderstorm whilst out and about should leave exposed areas such as summits, ridges and open spaces as quickly as possible and seek shelter. A mountain hike should never turn into a race against the weather.

As a general rule: In the mountains, the weather is part of the hike. If you keep an eye on the weather conditions, remain flexible and adapt your route to the current conditions, you’ll be safer on the trail and can relax and enjoy nature.

Walking trails to suit every taste

If you find out in advance about the route, distance, elevation gain and walking time, you’ll be better able to assess whether the walk suits your fitness level and experience.

It is important to take into account not only the planned route, but also the current trail conditions. Wet conditions, snow, ice or fallen trees can make a trail significantly more difficult and extend the walking time. Conditions in the mountains can change rapidly, particularly in spring and autumn.

The time of day also plays an important role. Setting off early enough gives you more time for breaks and to cope with unexpected delays. On longer hikes, you should also check whether and when mountain pastures or huts are open and whether there are places to stop for refreshments along the way.

On our website you’ll find an overview of the hiking trails around Spitzingsee. The individual routes are described in more detail there. You can also download our hiking leaflet containing the most important information about the trails and have a look at it before your hike.

When choosing a hike, pay particular attention to the estimated walking times and the respective difficulty level. This will help you better assess which route suits you and your group. The walking times given are approximate and may vary depending on your fitness level, breaks and trail conditions.

And very importantly: the planned route is not set in stone. If the weather changes, conditions are more difficult than expected or your energy levels are flagging, you should adjust the route or turn back. Good tour planning always allows for some flexibility in such situations.

The best way to keep up to date with the latest news

The Taubensteinbahn and Stümpflingbahn are open during the summer season. This is usually from mid-May to the end of October. The exact dates when the cable car service starts in summer and ends in autumn depend on the weather. You can check here to see whether the cable cars are open or closed: Lift status

You can find the standard operating hours and further information about our cable cars on our website. This way, you can plan your hike at your leisure and ensure that you get back down to the valley comfortably at the end of the day. The journey on the Taubensteinbahn takes about 15–20 minutes, and on the Stümpflingbahn about 10–15 minutes. So if you want to be at the top of the mountain at a specific time, allow about half an hour to spare.

In winter, the Stümpflingbahn, Suttenbahn and Kurvenlift are your lifts for accessing the ski area. You can also find their opening status here: Lift status

Twice a year – in April/May and in November – the lifts undergo maintenance for a few weeks. During these periods, the lifts are out of service.
